Abingdon MG event offers classic car rides for charity

The inaugural Ride Before You Buy show, organised by the MG Car Club and its Abingdon Works Centre, will take place at Abingdon Cricket Club on Sunday, October 4, running from 10am to 4pm.

The event aims to offer more than a traditional car show by allowing visitors to engage with MG models from every era, meet their owners, and enjoy a passenger ride in select vehicles for a voluntary charity donation.

Lorraine Noble-Thompson, chairman of the MG Car Club, said: “Ride Before You Buy is about sharing our passion for MGs with everyone.

“We want visitors to experience these wonderful cars first-hand, meet the people who own them, and discover why the MG Car Club has remained such a friendly and welcoming organisation for generations.

“By introducing these cars to new audiences today, we hope to inspire the custodians of tomorrow.”

The event will also feature appearances from former employees of the MG factory in Abingdon, giving visitors a rare chance to hear first-hand accounts of the marque’s history and legacy.

In addition to passenger rides, the event will include MG displays, club exhibitions, merchandise, craft stalls, and food and drink options including pizzas and barbecue fare.

Passenger rides and other voluntary donations will raise funds for the Abingdon Food Bank, supporting the community while offering a memorable experience for car fans.

Angie Wright, chairman of the MG Car Club Abingdon Works Centre, said: “There could be no more fitting location than Abingdon, where so much of the MG story began.

“Bringing together the cars, the people who built them and today’s owners creates a unique opportunity to celebrate the marque’s remarkable heritage while looking forward to its future.

“Whether you’re considering your first classic car or simply looking for a great family day out, we’d love to welcome you.”

MG enthusiasts are expected to attend from across the UK, with displays representing nearly every MG model ever manufactured.

The organisers hope the event will inspire a new generation of MG fans by giving them a chance to experience the cars up close.

The event is open to all ages, with free admission.

Visitors will also have the opportunity to explore Abingdon’s historic town centre, just a short walk from the cricket club, making it an ideal day out for families and motoring fans alike.
