Aaron Ramsey gives Luka Lynch update after Oxford United absence

The winger was absent from the Oxford squad at the weekend, the U’s going on to beat Burton Albion 3-0 in League One.

United left it late to beat the Brewers, Siriki Dembele notching the opener in the 76th minute before a late flurry saw Louie Sibley net in the final minute and Gatlin O’Donkor bag a third in stoppage time.

Villa loanee Lynch was left out of the squad after making his debut in the previous fixture.

After arriving in OX4 on deadline day, his free loan move confirmed the morning after Oxford’s 3-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town, the 19-year-old came on against Leicester City to make his first appearance for the club.

The exciting wide man played the final half an hour at the King Power Stadium and made an instant impact, assisting Jamie McDonnell for the last goal in a rampant 4-0 win for the Yellows.

With Lynch then missing out on a potential home debut the following week, United boss Ramsey explained the youngster’s omission.

“Luka was just feeling a bit fatigued, but we’re not going to gain anything now by taking any risks,” the former Arsenal midfielder disclosed.

“So for us, it was an educated decision.

“Obviously, we’d like to see him out there after his little cameo last week and showing a glimpse of what he can do.

“So for us, [it is] looking at the bigger picture, really; have a good week’s training again next week and then be back in for next weekend.

“Some of the demands and making his first senior debut last week and things like that.

“He’s young and he’s adapting as well…but we’ve got a squad full of players who are ready to play as well.”

This season is Lynch’s first in senior football after coming through the Villans’ academy.

An FA Youth Cup winner, the young Englishman spent the recent pre-season amongst Unai Emery’s Europa League-winning first team.

Despite not yet made a senior appearance for the Midlands club, Lynch scored twice and assisted once in summer friendlies against European giants Porto, League Two side Walsall and Indonesian outfit BG Pathum United.

Oxford were required to receive special dispensation from the EFL for the youngster’s loan signing – as they were with Coventry City loanee Kai Andrews – due to the club being put under a temporary transfer embargo.

The U’s host Cambridge United next as they look to make it three wins, and three clean sheets, in a row.
