On the southbound side in south Oxfordshire, a car had crashed on the temporary 50mph section near between Milton and Chilton.

But it had came to a stop spread across both lanes, blocking all cars, vans and lorries from passing.

The road had to be shut for several hours while recovery was arranged, with traffic jams of over seven miles and more than 90 minutes added to some drivers’ commute home.

Thames Valley Police confirmed on Friday morning that there was no serious injury as a result of the crash.

One woman sat in the traffic jam told us: “We’ve been sitting southbound since a little after 4pm. We have not moved since then.

“Everyone is parked with engines off pulled to the side having let emergency vehicles through around 4.45pm.”

Lanes were reopened at about 6pm.

Meanwhile, at the same time all this was happening, there was another crash on the A34 northbound between the Peartree and Botley interchanges at Oxford.

One lane was shut by emergency services while recovery was arranged, also bringing extensive congestion to not just the dual carriageway but also the ring road, Woodstock Road and Banbury Road as traffic approached it.
