The iconic tree in Broad Street by Trinity College fell on Tuesday afternoon with the reasons for its collapse not yet known.

Since then Oxfordshire County Council has updated that the tree has been cleared from the road in an “out of hours” operation.

People have expressed their dismay on social media about the tree falling with one user commenting they regularly ate their lunch underneath it.

Tour guide Debbie Gerrans said she was incredibly sad about the tree falling and hoped they replaced it with a new one.

She said: “I have met many groups hundreds and thousands of people outside Trinity College gates where that lovely tree used to stand and shaded me from this rain or sun.”

Others said that they thought the tree must have struggled to get enough water underneath the pavement.

Commenting underneath a photo of the tree standing earlier this month, Szilvia Kallai said: “I can see it’s not in balance. They should have cut it back years ago. It couldn’t bear the weight. It’s so sad.”

The tree faced the market in Broad Street and is close to the spot where the Protestant martyrs – Hugh Latimer, Nicholas Ridley and Thomas Cramner – were burned at the stake.

The street is also known for its bookshops, including Blackwell’s, with the now fallen icon being one of the few trees on the road.

The vehicle was stopped and taken by Thames Valley Police in London Road in Oxford last night (Tuesday, April 21).

Officers say the driver held no driving licence and also had no insurance, which led to the car being seized.

The police force informed the community of the car being seized with a statement issued this afternoon (Wednesday, April 22) with a photograph attached.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: “Licence and insurance, anyone?

“Last night, officers stopped this vehicle on London Road, Oxford.

“Checks revealed the driver held no driving licence and had no insurance.

“Unfortunately, that’s a double no, so the drive stopped here.

“Stay legal. Stay insured. Stay safe.”

The incident occurred this afternoon at around midday (Wednesday, April 22) as the trio were sent to Headley Way.

Rhodri Jones, who works at the nearby John Radcliffe Hospital, spotted smoke on his way home.

“There is a house fire with fire engines present on Hedley Way near the entrance to the hospital,” he said at the time.

“There is a general smell of burning in the area.”

The incident took several hours to be dealt with as fire crews did not depart the scene until 3.30pm in the afternoon.

A spokesperson for Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called today just after midday, sending three fire engines to Headley Way in Oxford.

“Crews used hosereels to extinguish a fire in the living room of a semi-detached domestic property, with a pressure ventilation fan used to clear the smoke.”
