Councillor David Edwards-Hughes said numerous people have contacted him about The Leys Splash Park in Witney being opened earlier.

It is open daily from noon to 6pm.

The Conservative politician said: “The facility is a brilliant asset to Witney, made possible because councillors a decade ago had the foresight to set aside dedicated funding year-on-year for these major upgrades.

“However, I have been contacted by numerous residents—particularly parents of toddlers and very young children—who want to see the splash park open earlier.

“They want to enjoy the water before the midday heat becomes too intense for little ones.

“As a toddler dad myself, I completely understand and share those concerns.”

This comes as Oxfordshire experiences record temperatures with 32.9°C recorded at nearby Brize Norton on Monday, May 25.

Considering this, a spokesperson for Witney Town Council – which runs the facility – did not rule out extending the hours.

They said: “Last year the town council made adjustments as the season went on based on water usage and demand and this kind of flexibility is likely to be the case again this year, subject to council approval.”

Mr Edwards-Hughes added: “We have this incredible, modern facility, and we need to ensure it works for everyone in our community.

“I have asked council officers to look into what can be done to expand the hours so that the splash park is safer, more accessible, and more convenient for a wider range of ages.”

The Oxford concert on Tuesday, May 26, was the penultimate event in his programme which ends this evening (Wednesday, May 27) in Leeds.

The music is described as ‘Ol’ fashioned denim-and-dusty-boots country rock’ and is supporting Mr Sutherland’s fourth studio album Grey which has recently been released.

When in Oxford on Tuesday, he was greeted by Ms Atkinson who had previously met him in the city in March 2020.

Oxford trans rights protest this weekend after EHRC guidance

Published

on

The protest, by activist group Oxford 4 Trans Rights, is happening on Saturday to protest the updated code of practice written by the UK equalities watchdog, the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

In a statement, the group said: “Now is the time to stand up for ourselves, and for our friends, family and community to send a message that we will relentlessly resist trans exclusion and discrimination.

“Please join us this Saturday as we protest for our rights, reject the EHRC guidance.”

The group are meeting this Saturday in Oxford’s Bonn Square at 3pm.

The guidance update covers all nine protected characteristics, such as disability, race and sexual orientation, but there is especial focus on this update because it also includes practical guidance on how to apply last year’s Supreme Court ruling about single-sex spaces.

The landmark judgement said that, for the purposes of the Equality Act, the legal definition of a woman was based on biological sex.

This has had ramifications for who can now access women-only services and spaces, such as refuges or toilets.

The new code reinforces last April’s ruling, and gives a wide variety of practical examples showing how service providers might apply it.

The code is clear that if a service provider admits a trans person to a service that aligns to their lived gender, that service can no longer be described as single sex and the provider is “very likely” to be at risk of legal challenge.

The updated guidance has been condemned by many activist groups as a step back in equality and inclusion.
