Cherwell residents reminded to prepare for council elections
Cherwell District Council is advising residents to prepare for the council elections taking place on Thursday, May 7.
This includes making sure you are registered to vote, have an eligible ID and that you bring your identification to the polling station on election day.
Gordon Stewart, returning officer, said: “District elections form a crucial part of local democracy, putting residents’ voices at the forefront of key public services like housing, waste collection and planning.
“It is a chance to have your say, and we encourage everyone eligible to take their opportunity to vote.
“I’d like to remind voters to bring their photo ID to the polling station in line with the government requirements.”
Several forms of ID are accepted, including a driving licence, a passport and some bus passes.
Those without an eligible ID can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate before the deadline on Tuesday, April 28.
Mr Stewart added: “If you’re not registered to vote, you won’t be able to have your say on polling day.
“If you’ve recently moved home, turned 18 or changed your name, register to vote by Monday 20 April.”
Residents already registered at their current address do not need to re-register.
Elections will be held for a third of the seats on Cherwell District Council, with two additional seats contested following councillor resignations in Banbury Calthorpe and Easington, and Bicester West.
Polling cards have already been sent out, informing voters of the elections taking place in their area and the location of their polling station.
