Banbury – Man found dead near canal at Spiceball Park named

There was a heavy police presence at the canal, near Spiceball Park in Banbury on March 14.

Thames Valley Police confirmed that the body of a man was found following a ‘sudden death’. Police have also confirmed the man’s body was found in the canal.

The force added that it was not being treated as suspicious.

A Thames Valley Police spokesperson previously said: “We were called at around 12.30pm yesterday (14/3) to the canal adjacent to Spiceball Park, following reports of a sudden death.

“Emergency services attended but sadly a man was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“His death is being treated as unexplained, but not suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The man was named as Yurii Popov, 33, who lived in Banbury.

The inquest, which was opened by area coroner Nicholas Graham on April 2, confirmed Mr Popov was found unresponsive in the Oxford Canal near Hennef Way.

According to the inquest documents, Mr Popov was born in Ukraine.

Despite resuscitation efforts his death was verified at the scene. A post mortem examination has been carried out and the cause of death is pending further analysis.

The case was adjourned for a full inquest to take place at Oxfordshire Coroner’s Court on July 2 at 2pm.
